So yeah. We’re living in chaos right now. Our apartment looks as if we’ve been robbed. Only the bad guy broke in and dumped all his stuff instead of taking ours. If there’s anyone who’s at home in a mess, it’s probably me, but even I am struggling to deal with the post-move war zone we’re living in. Luckily, on Tuesday night I had an excuse to escape it because my dearest friend, Diana, was having a birthday.
And among other things, birthdays mean presents. And presents mean wrapping. And wrapping means paper. And short of the moving paper that is cradling Crate and Barrel’s finest in our kitchen, I had nothing. Well, that’s not true. I have a lot. If there’s one single thing that’s causing our apartment to look like a shanty town right now, it’s that I have about 22 boxes of craft stuff piled up all over the place. Problem in, nothing we own–and at the same time, everything we own–is accessible right now.
So like a squirrel digging for a nut he buried a few too many winters ago, I set about scavenging the place for something to wrap Di’s gift in. Surprisingly, it didn’t take me that long to happen upon this beautiful old sheet music I picked up at a book sale a while ago. They’re so simple, graphic and charming I knew I’d be able to do something with them someday and Di’s birthday turned out to be that lucky day.
I simply taped two sheets together and used them to wrap the box. Since my ribbon stash is likely currently tucked away in the same place as my 7th grade yearbook, I also needed an bow alternative to doll it up a bit. Luckily, I keep a knitting project at my desk at work for the rare occasion when I have time to work a few stitches. The last time I picked it up was March. So in the name of a quick pom-pom, I figured it was fine to steal from the leg warmer to pay the piper, so to speak.
Now that’s what I call a classical gift wrap idea. Get it? Mozart’s all over this box! Yeah, it’s a weak joke. But I think Mike’s mom, Charmaine–an amazing vocalist and my favorite mezzo soprano–will appreciate it.
