Quick + Easy Crochet Basket Pattern

I love a good basket. While I have a heap of them laying (unused) in my office, I still can’t help myself from wandering through the basket aisle every time I’m at Michael’s or Target.

There’s just so much potential in a basket. For me, there’s often some logic along the lines of “maybe THIS basket will be the key that unlocks my deeply hidden organization gene and my life, house and family will be made instantly less chaotic.” 

So far I have not actually found the basket able to live up to my life-changing expectations of it. And I hate to say it, but this easy crochet basket pattern might not either.

BUT this modern basket can serve as a place to stash all the things you don’t really want to look at all the time (read: Barbies) or just the things that need to say together in one spot (read: the yarn for your next crochet project).

In any case, this easy crochet basket pattern is filled with texture and functional sturdiness thanks to the Lion Brand Fast-Track yarn. I’ve used Fast-Track for other projects like the Audrey Tote as well as the finger crochet market bag and each time I’ve been so pleased with how nice the yarn is to crochet and how good it looks in the finished project. The handles in this easy crochet basket pattern are optional, so feel free to skip them if you’d rather not have handles or you’d prefer leather handles like I added to the Dollar Store Twine + Thrifted Belt Basket.

Explanation:
This easy crochet basket pattern is quick to work up and perfect for holding toys, towels, toilet paper, or best of all, yarn! It’s worked in the Lemon Peel stitch, which is a simple combination of single and double crochets. The bottom is crocheted back and forth in rows and then the sides are added by working in the round. Perfect project for confident beginners who want to practice jog-less color changes and working in the round!

Purchase a kit with all the yarn needed to make this basket, plus a printed copy of the pattern here!
• Lion Brand Fast-Track (Weight: 6/super bulky – 149 yds, 8 oz)
– Color A: Dune Buggy Denim (1 skein)
– Color B: Chopper Grey (1 skein)
– Color C: Airstream White (1 skein)
• Tapestry needle
• Size J (6 mm) crochet hook
• Stitch markers or safety pins

Measurements:
11” wide
10.5” tall

Gauge:
10.5 stitches = 4”
9 rows = 4”

Abbreviations and Glossary (US Terms):
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
sc3tog – single crochet three stitches together to create one single crochet
sk – skip
st – stitch
RS – right side
rep – repeat
PM – place marker

Overall Pattern Notes:
• The bag base is worked first and the body is added on top.
• The gauge is intentionally quite tight so as to create a basket isn’t too floppy.

BASE

Foundation Row: Using Color A, ch 25.

Row 1: Sk first 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), dc in each ch; turn. (23 dc)

Rows 2-23: Ch 1, dc in each dc; turn.

Do not fasten off.

SIDES

Notes:

• Round 1 is crocheted along all four sides of the base. Work the decrease stitches (sc3tog) in three stitches at each corner. (See diagram above)

• Follow instructions for crocheting jogless stripes explained in the Audrey Tote Bag pattern.

• Work with the RS of the basket facing you as you crochet so as not to make an inside-out basket.

• I find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the sl st at the end of each round in order to keep track of where the round began. Be sure not to crochet into this sl st when you come back around to it.

• When beginning Rounds 2 and on, work the first stitch of the round into the same st you slip stitched into the previous round.

• The sides are made with the Lemon Peel stitch, which you’ll create by alternating single crochets and double crochets. On the next round, you’ll dc in each sc and sc in each dc.

Round 1 (RS): Using Color A, ch 1, sc 21 along the edge of square, *sc3tog around corner, sc 21 along next side of base; rep from * twice more, sc3tog around final corner, sc of round to join (PM in sl st). (88 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, *sc in next st, dc in the following st; rep from * to end of round, sl st to first st of round to join.

Round 3: Ch 2, *dc in next st, sc in the following st; rep from * to end of round, sl st to first st of round to join.

Switch to color B.

Rounds 4-11: Rep rounds 2 and 3.

Switch to color C.

Rounds 12-14: Rep rounds 2 and 3.

Switch to Color A.

Round 15: Rep round 3.

Switch to color C.

Rounds 16-18: Rep rounds 2 and 3.

Switch to color B.

Round 19: Rep round 3.

If handles are desired, work Round 23 as stated below. If you don’t want handles, work Round 23 as a normal Round 2.

Round 20 (handle round): Work round 2 for 28 sts ending with a dc, ch 12, sk 10 sts, *sc in next st, dc in the following st; rep from * for 32 additional sts ending with a dc, ch 12, sk 10 sts, *sc in next st, dc in the following st; rep from * for 4 additional sts, sl st to first st of round to join. (92 sts)

Round 21: Rep round 3, continuing in pattern over the ch stitches of handles. (92)

Round 22: Rep round 2.

Switch to color A.

Round 23: Rep round 3.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
