Make and Do Crew Patterns Using Lion Brand Yarn
We’re proud to partner with Lion Brand Yarn for many of our free crochet patterns. If you’re new to Lion Brand, let us show you some of our favorite yarns.
• Try Wool-Ease Thick & Quick to make an extra warm blanket, fast beanie, or squishy chukka slipper boots.
• Use Chainette for a cozy, yet airy beret or an easy Tunisian triangle scarf.
• Pound of Love is economical for making large projects like a fast chunky blanket or a bean bag pouf.
• Hue + Me‘s range of mix-and-match colors makes it one of our favorites for beginner scarves and thick cocoon cardigans.
• And a perennial favorite, Lion Brand Mandala projects are always colorful, cheerful, and often include fewer ends to weave in.
Crochet Kits From Lion Brand
Many of our designs are available as kits directly from LionBrand.com. When you purchase a kit, you’ll receive all the yarn you need in your choice of colors and a printable PDF version of the pattern.
Where to Find The Best Free Crochet Patterns
Inspiration and instructions for crochet projects can be found all over the internet (on sites like this one you’re reading right now!)
Independent Designers
Thousands of incredible designers share their free patterns and/or downloadable PDFs on sites like Ravelry.com, Etsy.com, and LoveCrafts.com.
Yarn Retailers
In addition, yarn companies offer free patterns to promote their yarns. Lion Brand, Yarnspirations, Red Heart, We Crochet, Premiere, and Drops Design can be great sources for patterns if you feel nervous about substituting yarns. (All their patterns use their own yarn!)
Craft Stores and Websites
If you like to shop for yarn locally at stores like Michaels, Joann’s, or Hobby Lobby, looking at their websites can help provide project ideas for the yarn they carry.
New to Reading Written Crochet Instructions?
If you’re early in your journey of learning how to read crochet patterns, it can be really helpful to do a project that includes a written pattern and a step-by-step video tutorial.
All of our crochet tutorials on YouTube have a corresponding free pattern you can follow along with. I recommend starting with our rectangle slippers or easy ribbed beanie because the actual written patterns are extremely simple.
Sometimes, free crochet patterns also include a stitch chart. These visual diagrams act as a “map” of the stitches in a project and can be extremely helpful for visual learners. Learn how to read stitch charts and diagrams in our detailed tutorial.
What Can I Make in 1 Hour?
A beginner amigurumi pattern is a great idea if you only have one hour to finish something. Already have some amigurumi skills? You could likely finish many of these cuddly animals or no-sew amigurumi designs in about an hour.
When you want a dose of almost-instant gratification, a sunflower granny square or a toddler winter beanie are fun options.
An adorable crochet keychain is a quick way to add charm to your purse or suitcase, and kids will love collecting them on their backpacks.
If you’re headed to a housewarming party or need a last-minute gift idea, I always suggest a set of modern handmade coasters. Not only are they fast, they can also be easily customized to match the recipient’s home decor.
