    Hexagon Cardigans For Beginners

My favorite aspect of designing hexagon sweaters is that they’re some of the most friendly garments for beginners.

Most importantly, you’re able to easily adjust the fit because you can pin the main pieces together and try them on as you crochet. As you watch your project come together, you can make decisions about the:

    • Sizing of the bust
    • Length of the sleeves
    • How long your sweater will be

This ability to modify as you work is absolutely priceless if you’re indecisive like me, or new to crocheting sweaters.

You’ll love watching your hexi sweater come together.

How to Make a Simple Sweater Using Hexagons

Here are the main steps in making a crochet hexagon cardigan or pullover. You’ll find all patterns follow these same concepts, although sometimes they’re completed in a different order.

    Step 1: Make two hexagons

Larger hexagons will create a looser fit at the bust and around the arms. Don’t be alarmed when the hexies become wavey – this is meant to happen!

Two granny stitch crochet hexagons laying side by side.

    Step 2: Seaming Hexagons

Join the hexagons together to form the back of the garment. (Mattress stitch or slip stitching works well.) If making a pullover, join them in the front too.

Two granny stitch crochet hexagons folded before seaming into a cardigan.

    Step 3: Extend the Length

Add additional rows/rounds to the bottom of the sweater to make it longer.

A crochet hexagon cardigan before adding sleeves and hood.

    Step 4: Lengthen the Sleeves

Work rounds to extend the sleeves. Sometimes these include decreases to taper toward the wrist.

Step 5: Pockets, Hood, or Collar

Add any finishing details like a crocheted ribbing, buttons, or pockets.

Some patterns expand on this framework to customize the fit even more. This often involves adding additional rows to certain sides of the hexagons in order to make the chest circumference larger without making the sleeves looser.

The idea of knitting a simple baby sweater from hexagons goes way back.

In 2016, I set out to use the same concept to develop a way of crocheting sweaters. I wanted to figure out how to make a true cardigan with longer sleeves and more body length.

Since then, I’ve perfected a way of teaching this process so that you can customize a sweater that fits your body, even if you’re not a geometry whiz!

    Solid Hexagon Cardigan

For a quick and easy project, create an open-front sweater by seaming two hexagons together. The tutorial will show you how to use a tape measure to adjust the size of your cardigan so it fits perfectly. This pattern differs from many others because it uses solid double crochet instead of the granny stitch. This technique produces a more solid fabric with fewer gaps.

The striped design can be achieved using six different colors. Alternatively, grab your favorite medium weight self-striping yarn or use a solid color for a more streamlined look. Thanks to the worsted-weight yarn, this cardi is light enough to enjoy year round.

What Size Should My Hexagon Cardigan Be?

Cardigan size depends on the pattern you choose and your body measurements. When most people ask this, I think what they really mean is, “How big should I make my hexagon to crochet a cardigan?”

One of my favorite things about garments made from hexagons is that you can try them on as you go. I always recommend pinning your main hexies together to evaluate the fit before doing any seaming.

For a looser fit around the bust: Add rounds to both hexagons.

For a tighter fit around the bust: Eliminate rounds of both hexagons.

Use a flexible measuring tape to figure out your bust measurement and select a size from the pattern you’re following.

    Hexi Cardi Sizing Guide

This chart provides general measurements for cardigan sizing based on bust size. The suggested measurements result in a loose, oversized fit. If you prefer a tighter fit, size down.

    Helpful Supplies

The crochet materials you need to make your sweater will vary by pattern. Here are the essentials you’ll want to have:

    • Yarn: Each pattern will include yarn recommendations and alternatives.
    • Crochet hook: Use the size recommended on your yarn label.
    • Tapestry needle/yarn needle: For weaving in ends and joining.
    • Scissors
    • Stitch markers: To mark your place and help track rows and rounds.
    • Paper to label the hexagon sides: In our hexie pattern PDFs, we provide printable labels to pin to each hexagon side to better stay oriented as you work.
Two crochet hexagons folded into the sleeves and body of a cardigan.
I recommend labeling your hexagon sides to avoid confusion as you work.

    Common Questions

I’ve found there are a few places people get confused when making sweaters out of hexagons. Here are the most common questions I receive. If I didn’t answer your question here, please leave a comment below. I love teaching people this magical method of making garments!

Do I turn at the end of each hexagon round?

Turning at the end of each round is determined by the pattern you’re following. Generally, though, I recommend working in turned rounds because it means the texture will remain the same from the hexagons to the extensions, such as the sleeves and extra length.

If you work in hex rounds that aren’t turned, you’ll have a definite wrong side and right side of your fabric, regardless of the stitch used.

What’s the best way to seam the hexagons together?

The best method for joining your hexagons depends on your preference and if you need the seam to lay flat. The most invisible joining technique is using a tapestry needle to do the mattress stitch.

If you despise sewing though, you can also slip-stitch your sweater halves together, although this can leave a slightly more visible seam.

    Did you try this?
