Get ready. I’m about to drop a cute bomb on you.
Seriously. This baby Frosty business is going to make you wish it could stay 12 degrees all year.
Alright maybe not. But this free crochet hat pattern is definitely going to make the winter a lot more bearable. (Hey, at least you can look at a really cute kid dressed up as a really cute snowman while you’re scraping ice off your windshield. Sounds like an upgrade to me.)
Despite there being a few different elements to complete in this hat pattern, it’s actually a pretty good project for someone who is just beginning to read crochet patterns.
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn throughout. I used Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, which is a cotton/acrylic blend. I like it because it gives a nice shape and texture to crocheted items and it’s a great value at about $5 skien. You could definitely substitute a different worsted weight yarn if you’d like.
I’m still practicing my crochet pattern-writing skillzz, so please leave a comment or email me (makeanddocrew@gmail.com) if you have any questions or something doesn’t look quite right to you.

To create braided snow man “scarf”:
Cut 6 15″ pieces of yarn. Using your crochet hook, weave two pieces at a time through the bottom three single crochet stitches of the ear flap. Braid the 3 strands together. When desired length is achieved, tie a piece of yarn around the braid using a few knots and trim any excess.

To add accent berries to snowman’s hat:
Using your crochet hook, thread a piece of scrap yarn through the hat, making sure there’s a strand of hat yarn in between your scrap yarn. Use the strands of scrap yarn to tie several knots, one on top of another. Thread both pieces of scrap yarn back into the hat, creating a little knotted bobble on the outside of the hat. Thread the strands back to the top of the hat brim, leaving a strand of hat yarn in between. Repeat the knotting process until you have as many berries as you want. Thread the strands to the underside of the hat, leaving a strand of hat yarn between the two scrap pieces. Tie a few knots to fasten things off and trim the scrap yarn.
Sew on the button eyes, carrot nose and grey snow man’s hat using your tapestry needle.
Plop your adorable snowman hat on the nearest baby and try not to “melt” from all the cuteness!

The snowman hat would like so cute on my grandson.

I bet it would. I like that this hat is pretty gender neutral. It can be hard to find patterns that work with girls and boys 🙂
