This C2C crochet Christmas pattern is the second in my free afghan series. This monochromatic bulb ornament would work great as a festive pillow front too!
Last week I shared the pattern for the first square in the modern Christmas throw I’m making for my family. I’m notorious for last minute Christmas Eve DIYing, so I’m sharing these patterns now so that there’s enough time to make them before December. I definitely want to be enjoying my Christmas afghan next to the fire while I madly finish all the other DIY gifts that will inevitably need attention on December 24th.
This is my first corner to corner crochet project and I’ve had so much fun watching each square materialize before my very eyes. I love stopping every few rows to see how the image is coming together. It truly is like illustrating with yarn and I’m totally “hooked!”
If you saw last week’s Rudolph square, you know that I’m going to share the free pattern for one modern Christmas square per week over the next several weeks. This will allow you enough time to make the graphgan yourself before Christmas if you’d like, but most importantly, by sharing that weekly deadline publicly, you can hold me accountable to actually finishing one square per week.
Here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come:
I wanted the design of each square to feel contemporary, so the colors will be essentially monochromatic with pops of color worked in. If you have any interest in designing your own graphs, you have to check out Stitch Fiddle! It’s a site that allows to customize your own charts and graphs and it’s SO addictive. Oh, and it’s free!
If you’re not ready to crochet an entire Christmas afghan, you could use the ornament graph pattern to make a pillow front and then make the same sized square for the back in a solid color. Then it’s super easy to sew the squares together like I did in this pillow pattern. This square pattern is about 15×15″, so a 14×14″ pillow form would work perfectly.
IMPORTANT NOTE:I’m using half double crochet stitches for my C2C squares instead of the usual double crochet stitches, so when I’m adding a box or square at the beginning of a new row, I’m chaining 5 instead of the usual 6 chains. Then I work my first hdc of that box into the third chain from the hook. At the beginning of each box (after the slip stitch), I use 2 chains instead of the usual 3 you’d use with a double crochet C2C project. This has allowed me to maintain a lot of visual detail in the graphs, yet hopefully end up with an afghan that’s not too massive to snuggle under on the couch. (Each square should end up about 15×15″ when you use half double crochets.)
Supplies So you can spend more time c2c-ing and less time shopping, this post contains affiliate links at no extra cost to you. • Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice: 1 skein (or maybe slightly more) of “Linen,” a partial skein of “Peacock” and a small about of “Dusty Grey” • Lion Brand Wool Ease: partial skein of “Seaspray” • size G/4.5 mm hook (I really like this affordable set of hooks.)

Which brand yarn and color did you use for the hook portion of the ornament? The gray portion… Thank you for sharing your pattern! This will be my first foray into c2c crochet.
Hi! I’m working on this pattern now and am so excited at how it’s going. I just finished the reindeer last night and it’s amazing! I do have a question, though, I can’t seem to find the dusty grey color of yarn in the Vanna’s Choice yarn so I wanted to double check that that is the correct name and brand. Thanks!!
Yay! I love that you’re getting a head start on this. That’s what I did last year too and we were able to enjoy it all Christmas season. I’m not seeing the Dusty Grey color on Lion Brand’s site now, but I do think “silver grey” could be a good alternative. 🙂

November 23, 2016 at 9:19 pmHey Kimberly,
It’s Vanna’s Choice and it’s called “Dusty Grey.” Thanks so much for pointing out that I left that out of the instructions. I’ve added it now.
I hope you enjoy c2c! This afghan is my first c2c adventure and I’ve really been loving it!
