    Yarn Requirements

Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick
    (Weight: 6/Super Bulky  –  106 yds, 6 oz, 170 g)

    Colors Pictured:

    Fisherman [640-099] – 2 balls

    Driftwood [640-554C] – 3 balls

Note: Some colors of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick come with 170g/106yds and some come with 140g/87yds. The full size stocking requires 340g/212yds, so you’ll need 2-3 balls depending on the color.

A yarn skein, a leather punch, a leather belt, a red embroidery thread and a crochet hook for crochet stocking supplies.

    Additional Supplies + Materials

    • Tapestry needle
    • Size N (10 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
    • Stitch markers or safety pins
    • 8.5 x 1” piece of leather belt (optional)
    • Leather punch (optional)
    • Embroidery thread

    Measurements

Approximately 6.5” wide at boot and 18.5” tall, not including hanging loop

    Gauge

    10 fpdc/bpdc x 6 rows = 4”

While meeting the gauge is less important in this project, you want to make sure your stitches are fairly tight so that your stocking retains its shape. If you’re finding your fabric too loose, try again with a smaller hook.

    How to Crochet Post Stitches

Post stitches are worked around the vertical bar of a stitch instead of into the top of it. With front post stitches, you’re always inserting your hook from the front of the fabric. And with back post stitches, you’re always inserting your hook from the back of the fabric.

See our step-by-step stocking video tutorial above for more info.

How to do a front post double crochet stitch by inserting hook from front to back and back to front.
To do a front post double crochet, insert hook from front, around stitch post, and back to front of fabric.
How to do a back post double crochet stitch by inserting hook from back to front and then to back again.
To do a back post double crochet, insert hook from back, around stitch post, and out through back of fabric once again.

    Overall Pattern Notes

    • If you’re new to reading crochet patterns, check out more info here.
    • This stocking is worked from the toe up to the top of the “boot.”
    • At the end of each round, the number in parenthesis indicates the number of stitches you should have. If no number is given, it’s because the number is the same as the previous round.
    • The chain three (the turning chain, aka tch) at the beginning of each row/round counts as a double crochet throughout.

    Stocking

    • The stocking is worked in turned rounds. This means you’ll end each round with a slip-stitch to the top of the chain 3 that began the round. Then, turn your project to work back in the opposite direction.

    Toe

    Foundation: Make a magic ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3, 7 dc in magic ring, slst to top of tch to join; turn. (8 sts)

Round 2 (WS): Ch 3, 2 dc in each st, 1 dc in base of tch, slst to top of tch to join; turn. (16 sts)

Round 3 (RS): Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around, 1 dc in base of tch, slst to top of tch to join; turn. (24 sts)

The toe of a crochet Christmas stocking with the heel in progress.

    Heel

Now, we’ll work back and forth in rows of double crochet to form the heel. Half of the stitches of the toe section will be ignored until we pick them up again in the boot section.

Note: The chain 2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch. This means you will work into the first stitch instead of skipping it.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 2, dc in each of next 14 sts; turn. (14 sts)

Rows 2-3: Ch 2, dc in each of next 14 sts; turn.

    To Join Back of Heel:

    1. Turn stocking WS out. Fold heel section in half so Row 3 is folded over on itself.
    2. Ch 1, slst through both loops of each stitch to seam the heel together.
    3. Fasten off and rejoin yarn where heel seam began. Alternatively, pull up a loop of your current working yarn, chain a couple stitches and loosely slip stitch your way to the point where the heel seam began. This will eliminate an extra yarn tail to weave in.

    Boot

Note: The chain 3 at the beginning of each round does count as a stitch.

With yarn attached at heel seam:

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3, evenly space 7 dc over row edges of heel, working into last round of toe *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st; rep from * until heel section (16 sts total), evenly space 8 dc over row edges of heel, slst to top of tch to join; turn. (32)

Round 2 (WS): Ch 3, *bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st; rep from * ending with a bpdc, slst to top of tch to join; turn.

Round 3 (RS): Ch 3, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st; rep from * ending with a fpdc, slst to top of tch to join; turn.

Rep Rounds 2-3 until your boot section contains 16-18 total rounds, depending on your stitch tension and desired stocking height. It’s important to end with a Round 2/WS round and preserve enough yarn to work one more round and the hanging loop.

Finishing Edge (RS): Ch 3, dc in each st around, slst to top of tch to join.

Keep yarn attached if you plan to crochet your stocking loop. If you plan to add a leather loop, fasten off and weave in end.

    Stocking Hanger Loop

    Crocheted Loop Version:

With attached yarn, we’ll create a foundation chain, single crochet into the chain stitches, then work back up the foundation chain on the opposite side.

Foundation: Ch 15 (or desired length).

Row 1A: Sc into second ch from hook and each remaining ch, slst to stocking edge, slst across loop base to position yarn to work into bottom loops of foundation chain.

Row 1B: Working back toward where 1A began, sc in bottom loop of each foundation chain.

Fasten off leaving a 15” yarn tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle.

Fold rectangle over so top is positioned inside stocking. Use tapestry needle to sew stocking hanger rectangle into a loop. Weave in yarn tail.

    Leather Loop:

    1. Cut an 8.5-9” long leather rectangle. The width can be whatever you like, but it is recommended that it be around an inch wide.
    2. Using a leather punch or nail and hammer, punch four holes in each end of leather rectangle.
    3. Fold rectangle over back of stocking edge where final round was joined.
    4. Use red embroidery floss to sew leather in place. Alternatively, use a metal grommet or sew buttons atop the leather.

Hang your stocking by the chimney with care!
