Additional Supplies + Materials
• Tapestry needle
• Size N (10 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
• Stitch markers or safety pins
• 8.5 x 1” piece of leather belt (optional)
• Leather punch (optional)
• Embroidery thread
Measurements
Approximately 6.5” wide at boot and 18.5” tall, not including hanging loop
Gauge
10 fpdc/bpdc x 6 rows = 4”
While meeting the gauge is less important in this project, you want to make sure your stitches are fairly tight so that your stocking retains its shape. If you’re finding your fabric too loose, try again with a smaller hook.

How to Crochet Post Stitches
Post stitches are worked around the vertical bar of a stitch instead of into the top of it. With front post stitches, you’re always inserting your hook from the front of the fabric. And with back post stitches, you’re always inserting your hook from the back of the fabric.
See our step-by-step stocking video tutorial above for more info.
Overall Pattern Notes
- If you’re new to reading crochet patterns, check out more info here.
- This stocking is worked from the toe up to the top of the “boot.”
- At the end of each round, the number in parenthesis indicates the number of stitches you should have. If no number is given, it’s because the number is the same as the previous round.
- The chain three (the turning chain, aka tch) at the beginning of each row/round counts as a double crochet throughout.
Stocking
- The stocking is worked in turned rounds. This means you’ll end each round with a slip-stitch to the top of the chain 3 that began the round. Then, turn your project to work back in the opposite direction.
Toe
Foundation: Make a magic ring.
Round 1 (RS): Ch 3, 7 dc in magic ring, slst to top of tch to join; turn. (8 sts)

Crocheted Loop Version:
With attached yarn, we’ll create a foundation chain, single crochet into the chain stitches, then work back up the foundation chain on the opposite side.
Foundation: Ch 15 (or desired length).
Row 1A: Sc into second ch from hook and each remaining ch, slst to stocking edge, slst across loop base to position yarn to work into bottom loops of foundation chain.
Row 1B: Working back toward where 1A began, sc in bottom loop of each foundation chain.
Fasten off leaving a 15” yarn tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle.
Fold rectangle over so top is positioned inside stocking. Use tapestry needle to sew stocking hanger rectangle into a loop. Weave in yarn tail.
Leather Loop:
- Cut an 8.5-9” long leather rectangle. The width can be whatever you like, but it is recommended that it be around an inch wide.
- Using a leather punch or nail and hammer, punch four holes in each end of leather rectangle.
- Fold rectangle over back of stocking edge where final round was joined.
- Use red embroidery floss to sew leather in place. Alternatively, use a metal grommet or sew buttons atop the leather.
Hang your stocking by the chimney with care!
