How is a Corner-to-Corner (C2C) Crochet Pattern Different?

The corner-to-corner technique is worked exactly as it sounds. Instead of working back and forth in rows, you work diagonally from one corner to the other. This creates a fabric filled with small squares, ideal for projects featuring pictures or words.

Because of this “pixelated” quality, a C2C pattern almost always includes a visual element like a graph or chart. Sometimes it’ll also include row-by-row instructions verbally explaining how many squares of each color to make.

A c2c crochet graph pattern next to an in-progress project.
If you’ve ever done cross stitch or Perler bead designs, you’re probably familiar with a similar type of graph pattern.

Techniques to Know for C2C Projects

Most of the free C2C patterns below use some or all of the following techniques. Follow our step-by-step tutorials to brush up on your skills before you start your next project.

    • C2C increasing and decreasing to make a rectangle
    • Changing colors
    • Reading a chart or graph
    • Weaving in ends

Our beginner C2C tutorial covers all the skills you’ll need to make your first–or tenth!–project.

    Helpful Resources for Beginners

If you’re new to the C2C technique, check out our in-depth tutorial on corner-to-corner crochet for beginners. This complete guide covers all the basics and how to design your own C2C crochet graphs. That way, if you can’t find a pattern that ticks all your boxes, you can make your own!

We’ve also published a book if you’re the analog type. Beginner’s Guide to C2C Crochet includes detailed instructions and 15 contemporary patterns.

Modular yarn bobbin holder for corner-to-corner crochet (c2c)

Tips & Tricks for Working C2C Crochet Patterns

No matter your skill level, these helpful tips will ensure your corner-to-corner project is a success.

    • Opt for fewer color changes: Patterns with one or two colors are much easier for beginners.
    • Simplify the pattern: You can simplify a more complex design by removing unnecessary color changes. For example, our plaid bunny blanket can be worked as a solid silhouette to eliminate much of the yarn juggling and ends to weave in.
    • Manage your yarn: Learning how to keep your yarn organized when using multiple colors is helpful. Keeping your skeins in order will avoid a knotty mess. See my tips below for wrangling your yarn.
    • Try individual squares: If you’re looking for a more manageable (and portable) project, pick a pattern made up of multiple squares or motifs. Block patterns are ideal for on-the-go crafting.

    Customizing Your Project

All the patterns in this collection can be easily customized. Here are some ideas to personalize your corner-to-corner creations.

    • Color Combos: The easiest way to personalize your project is with color. In most c2c patterns, you can swap a self-striping yarn or reduce the number of colors to make the project more beginner-friendly.
    • Yarn Options: If you pick a graph pattern with a lot of detail, choose a line of yarn with a varied color palette.
    • Borders and Edging: Many patterns in this list include a border, but you can always choose your own.
    • Banner: For blankets, you can attach a c2c crocheted banner displaying a name, initials, or phrase. The Christmas afghan featured in this list is an excellent example of how this can uplevel your custom blanket. Check out our guide to designing your own graphs with StitchFiddle.com for more details.

    Essential Supplies

The crochet materials you need will vary depending on the pattern. Here are a few must-have supplies:

    • Yarn: Each pattern will include yarn recommendations and alternatives
    • Crochet hook: Use the size recommended on your yarn label
    • Tapestry needle: This is for weaving in ends and joining
    • Access to a printer: graph patterns are much easier to follow in paper form

Other notions: Scissors, stitch markers, and pattern-specific items like pillow inserts.

The Best Yarn for Corner-to-Corner Projects

Most C2C projects can be worked with any type or weight yarn. (Be aware that using a different yarn weight than the pattern calls for will also change the finished size.)

Personally, I pick yarns that come in a wide range of colors especially when I’m making graphgans.

Here are some of my favorite lines of yarn with excellent color variety.

    • Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling
    • Vanna’s Choice
    • Color Theory

Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to use several brands or lines of yarns in a single project to achieve your desired look. Our butterfly blanket uses Ferris Wheel (a marled self-striping yarn) to create the main silhouette and Wool-Ease (a solid color of the same weight) for the background.

    Using Scrap Yarn

C2C crochet is also a fantastic opportunity to use up leftover yarn. Just ensure the yarn scraps you use are all the same weight to achieve a uniform gauge throughout the project.
