Customizing Your Scarf
This is my favorite part! I love making each crochet pattern my own.
There are many ways to customize this lace scarf. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Yarn + Substitutions
I used Lion Brand Heartland yarn for this lace scarf. It’s wonderfully soft, and so easy to work with. Heartland is a premium acrylic with a heathery effect in tons of pretty shades, and it’s really easy to care for.
It’s one of my go-tos for almost any crochet sweater pattern, and you’ll find a shade for any mood or person. You can check out Heartland in action in the Habitat Cardigan, Elevation Cardigan and the Stained Glass Cowl.
Substitutions
If Lion Brand Heartland is not available near you, you can check YarnSub.com for similar suggestions. You can also see what people are making with Heartland yarn on Ravelry. If you look at the Floret Lace Shawl project page, you may also discover additional yarn options other makers have used.
Hook Choice for Crochet Lace
With a worsted weight yarn like we’re using here, we’re going to make sure the gauge is fairly loose and open. That’s why we’re using a size L (9 mm) crochet hook.
Gauge is very personal though. It’s always okay to adjust your hook size to meet the pattern gauge listed below, especially if you’re using a different yarn to crochet your lace scarf than Lion Brand Heartland.

Overall Pattern Notes
• The “petals” are perpendicular to the stitch just made. When working a Petal, after ch 3: Insert hook under top 2 loops of the dc2tog or dc3tog, in the “eye” of the stitch. Even though you are approaching from a different angle, you will still insert hook in the top of the stitch.

• See stitch chart at end of premium printable PDF for visual explanation of main stitch repeat.
• Chain 3 counts as 1 double crochet throughout.
• The stitch repeat of this pattern is 4 + 3. To modify the size of the shawl, adjust the number of chains in Foundation Row in multiples of 4. Then add 3 additional chains to that number. (Note that modifying the width or length will change the amount of yarn needed.)

!! Gauge Check !!
To check your gauge:
Meeting the pattern gauge is not critical when making this lacey scarf. However meeting the gauge will help ensure the scarf is the size you expect and uses the amount of yarn listed in the pattern.

Follow these steps to view the full free pattern below
- If there are too many stitches in 4” horizontally, increase your hook size and re-swatch.
- If there aren’t enough stitches in 4” horizontally, decrease your hook size and re-swatch.
- If swatch is measuring too small vertically, make a deliberate effort to pull loops up a bit higher before completing each single crochet.
- If swatch is measuring too large vertically, make an effort to work the loops of each single crochet a little tighter.

Common Questions About Lace Crochet Patterns
A lacy crochet stitch creates a lightweight, open fabric. Some open, lacy crochet stitches I like are the triangles and cones lace stitch, the snowflake stitch, the lacy shell stitch, the angel stitch, and of course the trusty V stitch.
To make something look lacy, you choose double crochet stitches (dc) or longer stitches like triple crochet (tc). You also use chains and other ways to add space to the pattern. In the Floret Lace Scarf pattern, we create flower “petals” with simple double crochet stitches.
To crochet an easy lacy scarf, first choose an open, airy crochet stitch. Pair it with a worsted weight yarn so that the scarf is easy enough to crochet quickly. Use your desired stitch to create a rectangle that fits the dimensions of your desired scarf size.
Alternatively, just follow the Floret easy lacy scarf pattern above and you’ll have all the details iron of for you.
Crochet lace is not difficult if you choose an easy lace stitch or pattern. The Floret Lace Scarf, for example, is made entirely with double crochet. If you can do a double crochet stitch, you can do this petal web stitch, too.
