How is a Corner-to-Corner (C2C) Crochet Pattern Different?
The corner-to-corner technique is worked exactly as it sounds. Instead of working back and forth in rows, you work diagonally from one corner to the other. This creates a fabric filled with small squares, ideal for projects featuring pictures or words.
Because of this “pixelated” quality, a C2C pattern almost always includes a visual element like a graph or chart. Sometimes it’ll also include row-by-row instructions verbally explaining how many squares of each color to make.
Techniques to Know for C2C Projects

Customizing Your Project
All the patterns in this collection can be easily customized. Here are some ideas to personalize your corner-to-corner creations.
Essential Supplies
The crochet materials you need will vary depending on the pattern. Here are a few must-have supplies:
- Yarn: Each pattern will include yarn recommendations and alternatives
- Crochet hook: Use the size recommended on your yarn label
- Tapestry needle: This is for weaving in ends and joining
- Access to a printer: graph patterns are much easier to follow in paper form
Other notions: Scissors, stitch markers, and pattern-specific items like pillow inserts.
The Best Yarn for Corner-to-Corner Projects
Most C2C projects can be worked with any type or weight yarn. (Be aware that using a different yarn weight than the pattern calls for will also change the finished size.)
Personally, I pick yarns that come in a wide range of colors especially when I’m making graphgans.
Here are some of my favorite lines of yarn with excellent color variety.
- Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling
- Vanna’s Choice
- Color Theory
Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to use several brands or lines of yarns in a single project to achieve your desired look. Our butterfly blanket uses Ferris Wheel (a marled self-striping yarn) to create the main silhouette and Wool-Ease (a solid color of the same weight) for the background.
Using Scrap Yarn
C2C crochet is also a fantastic opportunity to use up leftover yarn. Just ensure the yarn scraps you use are all the same weight to achieve a uniform gauge throughout the project.
